1. What is called mass defect? Give its significance.
2. Define radio activity.
3. Write the difference between Fusion and Fission
4. Why beryllium is considered best and most economical cladding material?
5. State the stages involved in reprocessing of spent fueL
6. What is the condition in selecting a good solvent for extraction?
7. What is called doubling time in breeding reactor?
8. Define critical size of the reactor.
9. Classify the nuclear waste on the basis of intensity of radiation and mention the range of each.
10. State the safety measures to be taken for safeguarding the people working in nuclear power plant.

11. (a) (i) Explain the working principle of a fast breeder reactor with a neat sketch (10)
(ii) Why shielding of a reactor is necessary? Write desirable properties of a good shielding material. (6)

(ii) Explain the modes of heat transfer in nuclear reactors. (8)
12. (a) (i) Define half life, mean life and decay constant. What are their significance in nuclear engineering? (8)
(ii) What is neutron flux? Briefly explain how the neutron cross-section varies with the neutron energy. (8)

13. (a) (i) What do you understand by nuclear fission? What are the essential requirements to cause nuclear fission? (8)

15. (a) (i) Outline the nuclear fuel cycle and explain the different types of wastes coming out at different stages. (10)
