What is the basis of choosing the shell side and tube side fluid?
Answered by: madhumithaa on: Sep 11th, 2013
Generally hot fluids are taken in the tube sides because it exerts heat which can be utilized by shell side fluid to avoid heat losses.
Answered by: minakshi on: Aug 14th, 2013
fluid having more viscosity and corrosive nature should go to tube side because it corrode only tube from inside but if this fluid send from shell side it will corrode shell as well as tube from outside. so it is economical to send from tube side.

You have two layer of material to provide insulation. They have heat transfer co-efficient (k1>k2).How will you obtain better insulation?
Answered by: E Smardy on: Mar 22nd, 2013
I dont think you can generalise this problem - at least not for flat plane and cylindrical co-ordinates. It really depends on how much bigger k2 is relative to k1 and how big the pipe thickness is relative to the diameter.
Answered by: Affwan Hassan on: Jul 8th, 2011
I do have a question here, If the material of lower insulation be bounded to the first system, doesn't that result in heat loss?

BARC Interview Questions for Computer Science Candidates

It was around 4 a.m. when i woke up in the train by alarm. Mumbai was about to come. It was the first time i was going to any metro city. What a soothing weather. I reached there 2 days before the interview. One of the main reason was the written exam of ECIL was going to be held just one day before the interview of BARC. My neighbor who is working in Indian Navy right now and placed in Mumbai booked a room for me in a hotel especially dedicated to armed force employee and their families. I was a  bit tired after a horrible journey of 40 hours. So I preferred to take rest for the whole day. In the evening he helped me to explore Mumbai. I visited Gateway of India, Taj Hotel, Nariman House, Marine Drive, Lover's Point and finally had a glimpse of Vankhede Stadium. Most of the people suggested me to leave the exam of ECIL and prepare for the interview of BARC but i wanted to be in safe position. So i went on to appear for the written exam of ECIL and you know it was the first time i experienced the journey in Mumbai Locals. Next day was going to be very crucial in my life. I relaxed myself saying the famous dialogue of Amir Khan "All will be well. Don't worry." and then tried to sleep but sleep was far away from me and i really didn't know when i slept that day.

Finally the deciding day comes. When i woke up i smell wines/darus/madiras around my room. I became very angry but i couldn't do anything. Anyhow i took a bathe and started dressing up. Suddenly my neighbor's call came and he told that his duty is extended to 10 a.m. and he will not be there to go for interview with me.
Now i have to make arrangement for myself. Mumbai is very big and crowded city and it is very difficult for a stranger to go anywhere. I skip my breakfast, went in hurry to the nearby local train stop. I forgot to worship also which i usually do daily. Local trains of Mumbai is very crowded in morning time especially because everyone is going to his workplace/office. Anyhow i reached the BARC School just in time. Still i haven't taken the breakfast. I raced away to the auditorium and what i saw is so many grooming and happy faces making themselves ready for the interview. I became happy because i was also among them.

Now its time for registration process. When my turn came i found that i had not my 7th semester result with me. How could i be so careless. I became slightly nervous and that is the reason why when i had to submit the BARC copy of challan by dividing the challan receipt vertically into two halves, i divided that horizontally. Uff.. What was happening. Anyhow the registration process completed and i was allowed to appear for interview with the condition that in case i am selected i had to submit the scanned copy of my 7th semester result within 1 week.
My turn was 3rd for interview and there were two rooms. So it became 2nd for 1st interview room. I knew that the interview of the 1st guy was going to be long and i had ample time for taking my breakfast. The interview was being held at the 12th floor of the building and i don't knew at that moment where the canteen is? Don't know why but i decided to quit my breakfast and take a 1+1/2 lunch after my interview. Finally my turn came. It was around 11:38 am. I entered the room and what i saw is there was an elliptical table, 7 experienced people had sat around that. Oh my god.!!

Questions asked -

How are you Mr. Raj?
Where are you staying in Mumbai right now?
From which college you completed your B. Tech?
Have you any job right now?
(Probably i shouldn't have told about my TCS job.)
Tell me your favorite subjects.
C , Data Structure , OS , DBMS , Networks.

C -

Which compiler did you use for c programming and which version?
Which shortcut is used for compiling and running the program on this?
Can you explain the process of compilation?? (asked many things concerned with compilation process while I was explaining like preprocessing, linker , libraries , assembler. In other words you can say the real fight starts.)
Write any program in c language and explain everything written in that. (I wrote iterative version of factorial program. Everything was correct. Thank god. I used %d for printing the factorial value. So he asked what will happen if i input the number 100 in program. I explained successfully (for >65635 concept in %d)).
Next question. You can guess from the previous question--- Yes. It was about recursion. They asked - Do you know the term recursion? Why don’t you use that concept for this program?
Write the syntax for the declaration of array and structure. What is actually passed when we pass array and structure in a function? (asked many things about passing of array and pointers too.)
(too many explanations... i started feeling tired.)

DATA STRUCTURE –

    What is data structure?
Name the data structure you knew so far and tell the use of everyone. (I tell the use of each. They asked the next questions about the use of stack which I told them.)
How can you use the stack to reverse the string? Can you write the program for that?
What is preorder, postorder and inorder traversal?? I explained them. Then they asked me to write the code for these traversals. Till I wrote the recursive version of preorder traversal, they asked me if I can write an iterative version of that program. I wrote that.
You said array and linked list are the linear data structure. What is difference between them?? Next questions – about declaration of linked list.
What is the demerit of linked list? I explained the demerits and explained too how circular linked list and doubly linked list removes that.
Can you write the program for reversing the linked list?

I was a bit tired now. I asked for some water. wo bhi to mere samne samosha kha rahe the.

What is balanced binary search tree?
Can you write the program for determining whether a given binary tree is balanced or not?? (I told the way how to do that only.)
What is hashing? How to avoid collisions?
Which sorting technique is best and why?

Operating System –

Explain what happens when we press power button of our computer i.e. which process executes. (I start with POST test.. they impressed.. even the lady who asked that question said that I asked this question to many but everyone started with booting… next questions about booting , volatile memory , RAM & ROM , secondary memory , hard disks etc.).
Which OS is installed on your computer? What is difference between vista ,xp and 7
    What is semaphore?

    What is paging?
What is thrashing? How to get rid of it?(Working-set model concept)

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM –Before the expert asked any question, i asked again if I have some more water.Honestly I was exhausted till then.

What are the advantages of DBMS?
How consistency and non-redundancy is ensured by DBMS?(Normalization)
What is the role of DBA?
Do you know SQL? On which software you practiced SQL in your college life and what did you do in your DBMS lab? (kya batata  kuch kiya to tha nahi bol diya student ke info store karne ka table banaya tha)
Queries for insertion, updating, adding attribute and changing attribute.
2 Phase locking. How it ensures concurrency control?
    What are disadvantages of 2PL?
    Conflict serializability?

Networks –

Name the layers of OSI layer and explain the function of each layer.
What are repeaters, switches, bridges, routers, gateways?
    What is CSMA/CD?
What is the distance vector routing?

Here, my interview ended. I was told to go now. Suddenly the words of Senior stroked my mind “if you are selected, they will give a white paper after the interview”. I was not able to face any interviewer face at that moment but anyhow I saw the chief interviewer’s face. He was smiling at me. I thought “kamina ye hans kyun raha hai”. But they didn’t give me that white paper. Bhari kadmon se mai room ke bahar aya hi tha ki peon ne andar se ake mujhe rukne ko bola. I thought “ho gaya kya be.. hey bajrang bali… plz..” but the peon again came outside the room after few minutes and said to me “you may leave now… :( :( ”.

And thus the dream of being a scientific officer in BARC remained a dream for me.. :( :(

BARC Interview Questions for Mechanical Engineering

My interview Experience with BARC (Mechanical engineering)

BARC Question Papers: Click Here

I qualified the written exam conducted by BARC and attended the interview.
First let me tell you that this is the most genuine and toughest interview among all the PSUs. This is the best interview methodology that they adopt.

They just ask for very basic questions of Intermediate (12th) level and want to check the basic understanding. Almost all the questions are practical questions no direct relation with the knowledge of core technical. In this way they look for the way you approach to solve a problem.
Because the post they offer you is scientific officers, post. This is a research oriented job that requires the great skills and knowledge to solve a real practical problem. So, this was a basic idea about the interview. Now let,s talk about the methodology, actually they ask you 4-5 subjects in which
you are more comfortable and ask the basic questions. But keep in mind that you are really comfortable with those subjects and you should be thoroughly prepared. Because they will try to divert you from your answer and will drill on topic till you surrender. But anyway you don,t worry
even if you are not able to solve a problem for whole but the way you approach and the basic concepts should be correct. They are generally the minimum time.

Interview is more than 45 minutes. Even the person they know will not be qualified; they drill him at least for 45 minutes. As the interview timing cross more than 45-60 minutes, your chance goes on increasing to get selected. Finally If they are satisfied with your performance then they give you a medical slip that insures your eligibility fir the interview. Final Result depends on the no. of posts and the merit list prepared on the basis of marks you achieved in written and interview. I wish you all the best for your interview.

It is well known that hard work and the luck both are that major factor that plays important roles in every exam. Your Luck also plays an important role that by which panel you are going to be interviewed. During my interview I was a victim of bad luck so I could not qualified the interview.
I had heard that the panel members being very helpful they bring you out of the pressure if you feel during the interview but this was not true in my case.

Anyways, I entered in the room, there were 5 members. The committee chairman asked me about my hometown. The whole conversation was in Hindi, so the people who are from Hindi background they don,t need to be afraid of this problem in PSU interviews.

Then he asked me "Is it your first interview or you
have gone through any other interview?", Me: "Sir this is my first interview". This normal conversation is just to make you feel good and to make
you comfortable.

Chairman: So you have done your B.Tech from IIIT?
Me: Yes Sir.
Suddenly another person interrupted as he was looking at my cv, he told to the chairman that I got first Prize in solid modeling Contest. This was a curse for me for that interview.
Chairman: So you got first prize in Modeling?
Me: Yes sir.
Chairman: What is Computer Aided Design?
Me: I told.
Chairman: You have been taught the Finite Element Methods course?
Me: Yes sir.
Chairman: Can you do the analysis of a cylindrical pressure vessel?
Me: No sir, actually we just learnt the analysis of one dimensional objects.
Chairman: But you know the basics of analysis steps?
Me: Yes sir.
Chairman: What will be the first step?
Me: We will take the symmetry and will not require going through the analysis of whole section.
Chairman: Draw the element of symmetry?
Me: I drawn.
Chairman: Next step?
Me: Boundary conditions and Forces.
Chairman: What will be the boundary conditions, forces etc.....?

I could not give the answers, and the trials were wrong and I was totally confused. but he rammed me a lot and wasted almost 10 minutes.

It was a bad impression that lead me through the darkness.
Then he asked me to put the name of subjects I studied in B.Tech as our curriculum is different from other colleges curriculum, It has major emphasize on Design. So under pressure I was not able to recall the subjects. I started to recall them and listed on the paper but didn,t minded to put them in the order

I prepared. Actually I prepared Material science, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Micro Metal Forming (for the fabrication of MEMS devices, a recent topic). So they just started asking the questions randomly from the subjects they got in that list. After a sometime chairman asked me about the subjects I am comfortable. I told and given the preference to Micro-Metal Forming that was a new topic for him and he decided to get out of the topic and asked about the issues when we go through the micro forming. I told that as we go from macro size to micro, the strength, isotropic behavior and surface roughness changes and affect a lot. Then he asked how surface roughness comes into picture?

Me: As material thickness approaches towards micro size, the no. of grain boundaries becomes fewer and grain boundaries sizes are in the order of microns so the very early surface has a lot of deviations that comes in picture. Then he asked: What is inside the space between two grain boundaries; Gas or Vacuum?
Me: Sir Vacuum. He Said: You are wrong, go and refer the books. and in this way he came out of the topic that he was trying for.
So, I will suggest you not to give any new topic as the persons taking interview may or may not be comfortable with that and it may be a curse to you.
In Thermo... he asked
He: there is a cylinder-piston system that contains a gas, a weight W is kept on piston what will be the pressure?
Me: Sir W/(g*A)---A: area, g: gravity (It was wrong actually I was in such a pressure that to calculate the pressure I was using the formula M/A)
Then another person asked me about "g", why I am using it ? I confidently said: sir to get the mass from weight
He knew that I am confused so he asked me to derive it,s dimension I derived then he asked me to derive the dimension of force by area and he asked me to compare, and I found my mistake. I said sorry and then
He: I am giving it "Q" all the boundaries are insulated so that no heat goes outside, calculate it,s final volume?
Me: I was confused and was asking about a lot of irrelevant information needed to solve.
He: This is all I told you now calculate the volume...no other information.
I could not derive it.
Then......Fluid:
He: I am having an wedge shaped vessel (triangular shaped) I want to know the water level at different places, what will be the levels of water at different tubes?
Me: Same level in every tube.
He: why?
Me: because of fluids property...pressure at a level is same at every point So the height raised will compensate for it.
He: ok so, pressure is constant at all the points in same level but different at different levels?
Me: Yes sir.
He: So if I make two holes at different levels and fit a tube at outside from the vessel then water will flow?
Me: yes sir.
He: If I place a turbine in between the pipe then will the electricity produced?
Me: No.
He: why?
Me: because water will flow once only.
He: but pressure difference is continuously acting at two different levels?
Me: as once water flows and the section gets filled pressure at the same level in vessel and pipe will be same, So no way it will flow again.
This was a section where I was somewhat comfortable and answered correctly.
SOM:
Shear stresses, how shear stress comes ....Is bending stress and shear stress same and a lot....they make me totally confused.
Mohr,s Circle related questions. That I replied correctly.
As you know that I am from Department of Mechanical Engineering. I qualified the written exam conducted by BARC and attended the interview.
